The Fur Trade and Its Impact on the Wabanaki
This presentation offers teachers the opportunity to enhance their students’ understanding of Wabanaki history. “The Fur Trade and its Impact on the Wabanaki” comes with a thumb drive with two Powerpoint Programs, a booklet providing the narrative for each of the slides, a bibliography, and a wooden chest containing eleven reproduction items related to the fur trade. The first PowerPoint offers insights into the daily life of the Wabanaki people in the years before foreign settlement. The second PowerPoint discusses the transition of Wabanaki life from the colonial era into the new republic, and highlights a variety of activities and roles of present-day Wabanaki people. The wooden chest accompanying these slides gives students a hands-on opportunity to experience some of the goods that the Wabanaki sought in trade.
“The Fur Trade and Its Impact on the Wabanaki” is available for a two-week time frame and is free to educators. The chest and materials can be picked up at the LCHA office in Wiscasset. If you wish to have it delivered to your school, there is a $15 delivery charge.
Heritage Children’s Basket
Classrooms can borrow the Heritage Children’s Basket for a week to two weeks. Each willow basket contains fifteen books designed for second to fifth grade students. The books are all relevant to Maine and/or the colonial and nineteenth century periods. When possible, Maine authors were chosen. Three games popular during the same time frame complement the books: Nine Pins, Draughts (an early term for Checkers), and Shut the Box (directions are included for each game).
