Step back and discover the fun side of history this summer at the Lincoln County Historical Association! Our “Summer with the Past” program offers two exciting week-long camps for children and teens, each designed to explore the skills and pastimes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Participants engage in hands-on history projects that both entertain and teach valuable historical skills.
The summer of 2026 is the tenth year that these programs have been offered. LCHA’s Education Director Louise Miller developed the program to take history beyond the school year and the classroom. Louise is known for making history come alive for students through her approach that combines hands-on immersive learning with information and stories that help kids picture themselves in the past.
Discovering 1776. Camp for Ages 8 – 11 (July 13 – 17)
This week-long adventure takes children on a journey 250 years back in time, where they will:
- Discover the secret codes used during the Revolutionary War.
- Cook and taste Colonial-era recipes at the FARMS Kitchen.
- Learn to write with a quill.
- Visit with a militiaman!
- Enjoy period music and games from the 18th century.
The program will be held at the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
Cost: $115 ($100 with LCHA member discount)
Sea Shanties, Shapenote, & School Dances of 18th & 19th Century Maine. Camp for Ages 10 – 15 (August 3 – 7)
Participants experience a week of hands-on learning and music traditions with activities guided by lifelong musician and music teacher Kelley Doore including:
- Sing traditional ballads and learn their stories.
- Play musical games and try out traditional instruments.
- Learn and enjoy traditional dances.
- Explore 18th-century music traditions hands-on.
Place and Time: Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
Cost: $135 ($110 with LCHA member discount)
Please note, students are expected to bring their own snacks and lunch.
About the Program
Summer with the Past – Stepping Back; Discovering Skills and Pastimes of the 18th & 19th Centuries was designed by Louise T. Miller, Education Director of the Lincoln County Historical Association’s Education Outreach program. The goal of these camps is to immerse young people in the skills and history that shaped the early years of Lincoln County, fostering a greater appreciation for the past.

If you are considering registering your child (children) and you need assistance covering the fee, please submit a letter of request for scholarship money. Requests will be handled confidentially.
